Editing effects in "Layers" View while playing audio on a Timeline.

When Playing a Timeline, the controls in the Layers View are greyed out and can not be edited.
Is there a way to enable editing of the effects in the storage places possible while the timeline is playing Audio?
Currently my work around is to re-configure my audio loopback and play the audio through another app while setting up and adjusting S2L and M2L effects. Then adding the effects to the time line, reconfiguring the audio loopback, and running the timeline to see how it all hangs together.
Making adjustments to the effects is then either done blind with the timeline and audio paused, or the loopback is re-configured, and the audio played again in an external app.
It works, but it's a slow process. I might be missing something?
The new Timeline, Scheduling and Audio Loopback are fantastic by the way.
