Best way to trigger S2L / M2L Storage Place With Sound

Post by Lysergix2555 »

Hi,

I am wondering what the best way to trigger a preprogrammed storage place would be?

Basically, I need to be able to trigger a storage place as soon as an audio track plays without having to hit the storage place button once the track begins playing.

E.G. Track starts playing - storage place 5 starts playing.

I know I can do this in a variety of different ways; however, I want to know what the best practice would be? Midi recording interface connected to the sound board?

Thank you in advanced for your replies.

Hi Lysergix2555,

Welcome to the MADRIX Forum!

You can either use the "Cue Lists" or "Timelines" function for that purpose.

Cue Lists:
- The Cue Lists function allows you to trigger Storage Places depending on Time Code or a fixed duration.
- In this use-case the audio track would be played back externally and MADRIX 5 works according to a received time code.

Here you will find further information:
https://help.madrix.com/m5/html/madrix/hidd_cue_list_.html

Timelines:
- With the Timelines feature you can load and play back an audio track and you can arrange your effects / Storage Places according to the audio track. The Audio track would be outputted from MADRIX 5 in that case.

Further information can be found here:

What if there is no time code on site?
Usually they just have an analog mixer board. Sometimes they use showcontrol for sound / video effects.
It all depends on the limitations on site. However, they usually do not have time code present.

Hi Lysergix2555,

You could use the "Timelines" feature instead, but in that case the audio track will be played back from MADRIX 5. I'm not sure what kind of triggers your system offers. Is it able to send a MIDI note / cc or an OSC command when a track starts to play?
Only with an audio stream it will be difficult to achieve what you want.

Thank you for your reply.
It really depends on the site.
I know that sometimes we can put a line in from their sound board/pc with music software. Some have midi note. But often times, the most common is a software that send udp commands.

Sometimes they use ask for udp commands for timeline triggers. As a workaround, I have been doing dmx remote triggers with a ue7 interface connected to a madrix stella for dmx input in order to be able to receive udp commands from their software. However, this is a bit cumbersome, and time consuming.

I am wondering since osc is udp based, i am wondering that maybe I can begin using osc commands for these types of triggers?

Each site is different, finding out more about the project I am currently working on. I wish to be as ready as possible.

Hi Lysergix2555,
Sometimes they use ask for udp commands for timeline triggers.
- Which kind of UDP protocol? Art-Net, sACN and OSC relies on UDP communication.
I am wondering since osc is udp based, i am wondering that maybe I can begin using osc commands for these types of triggers?
- Yes, it is UDP. MADRIX 5 supports OSC for remote control.
- You can trigger Storage Places with OSC for example, maybe this would be a solution for you.

Here you will find the address space of MADRIX 5:
